Research interests

Mesoscopic or multi-scale physics--I study how one can mathematically describe systems that utilize small-scale behavior into large-scale devices. With the ever-more-powerful abilities of materials scientists to design materials at the atomic scale, engineers and scientists need to understand how unique small-scale properties can help make new technologies better. My current focus is on how to describe thermal radiative transfer in nano-structured, reacting materials to facilitate efficient high temperature thermochemical syn-gas production. 

Numerical methods in engineering--Once a mathematical model has been formulated to describe the system under study, it needs to be solved. Solutions often take an enormous amount of computing resources, and novel, efficient algorithms need to be developed. Examples of my work in this area include: domain decomposition for complex multi-physics problems with non-trivial interface conditions, momentum-space discretization of transport equations for lattice Boltzmann-like methods, time marching for constrained electrodynamic systems.
